What is the Primary ‘Sport Premium’?
The new primary ‘sport premium’ funding for primary schools has been designed to help schools in a variety of ways. Some of the outcomes we hope to meet through the ‘sport premium’ funding are:
- Increased opportunities for competitive sport.
- Improved quality of teaching and learning in Primary Physical Education, including more dynamic exercise in lessons.
- Improvements in the quality and breadth of PE and sporting provision, including “increasing participation in PE and sport so that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles and reach the performances levels they are capable of.
Uses at SJS for the Sports Premium
- Hiring specialist PE teachers or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when teaching PE.
- New or additional Change4Life sport clubs
- Paying for professional development opportunities in PE/sport
- Providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport
- Running sport competitions or increasing participation in the school games.
- Providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs.
- An increased amount of intra school competitions- Dance mats, athletics, sports days.
- Making use of our outdoor learning environment.
Sports Premium Impact 2022-23
- The most recent Ofsted report (March 2015) stated;
Leaders use the primary sport funding effectively. An initial audit of teachers’ skills was carried out to ensure that the funding was directed precisely to where it would have the most effect. New resources now support the way that physical education is taught. The school’s checks show that lessons have improved because teachers’ skills have developed as a result of the additional training they have had from specialist coaches. The range of opportunities and pupils’ uptake of activity has increased significantly. The school now participates fully in inter-school tournaments.
At Scawsby Junior Academy, we are utilising the Primary PE and Sports Premium Funding to improve the quality and breadth of our PE and sport provision through improving the quality of teaching and learning in PE, encouraging our pupils to adopt healthy lifestyles and taking part and competing to a high level in a wide range of sports activities and tournaments.
Sports Premium funding continues to help Scawsby Junior Academy to flourish in terms of PE and sport. Active Fusion and The Doncaster Rovers Foundation have been employed to supply us with a variety of courses, training days and twilight sessions to give staff the opportunity to improve their PE teaching skills further. A number of staff members have been involved in CPD courses, provided by AF and DRF, in order to further their knowledge of various PE areas, including gymnastics, games and dance.
Children throughout the whole of KS2 have been given access to a range of extra –curricular sports clubs, such as football, multi-skills, athletics and dance. Members of The Doncaster Rovers Foundation have provided one club per week. Every club throughout the academic year has been full, which highlights the profile of sports and PE being raised significantly.
Teaching staff have continued to provide fantastic, progressive and engaging PE lessons across all units. PE coordinators have completed drop-in lesson observations as well as provided additional resources and support for teaching staff. CPD training in various areas of Physical Education has taken place, both during staff meetings by confident teaching staff as well as external agencies. This has provided staff new and exciting ideas for when teaching all the different areas of PE.
The Sports Premium funding plays a major role in the replenishment of equipment across the Physical Education curriculum. This equipment is replenished every term for Physical Education lessons, extra-curricular clubs as well as Positive Play at break times and lunch times.
SJA have taken part in a number of competitions arranged by both agencies, including the Doncaster Rovers football finals for both girls and boys. This year, inter and intra school tournaments were plentiful, allowing the children to take part in competitive and non-competitive competition. This included the Stoneacre Cup, Active Fusion’s Festival of Sport, End of Term Sports Carousel Activities as well as our own Sports Day.

Evidencing Primary PE and Sports Premium Funding
Sports Day 2023!Thank you to everyone who attended our annual Sports Day event yesterday. The atmosphere was electric with hundreds of spectators cheering on our fantastic children during 76 races!
A huge thank you goes to the PTA and all of the other volunteers throughout the event. Once again, the mums, dads and toddler races were extremely competitive! Thank you for volunteering to take part in them.

Hill House Cross Country Tournament (22nd of April 2023)On Saturday, we attended our first sporting event as Scawsby Junior Academy, at Hill House’s annual cross country tournament. Our team of brilliant runners were selected to represent our school in the spring term, when we held the running trials. The course presented some difficulty for our runners as the heavy downpour the night before made the race very difficult and slippery. However, this did not phase our fantastic athletes, who all showed true Scawsby Junior Academy resilience! The girls running in the under 9 girl’s race all placed in the top 20 runners. The boys running in the under 9 boy’s race were the team winners for their age group, with Freddie bagging himself a 1st place! The under 11 girls were also team winners, with Eva achieving 2nd place. The under 11 boys also ran an incredible race, with all runners placing in the top 15 and Frankie securing a 4th place. Overall, we bagged ourselves a superb 2nd place! A brilliant first sporting achievement for Scawsby Junior Academy. Hopefully, the first of many! |
